Irwin Bear

Ann and Irwin Bear

Irwin was President of San Francisco Hillel from 2006-2009. He stepped into the position when our Hillel was facing many challenges. In his time he was a relentless advocate for the students of San Francisco. He was never afraid to highlight our needs and our achievements and never afraid to push the board and staff along.

Irwin was a proud alumnus of San Francisco State University and he enjoyed telling students of his experiences and his life story. He never spoke down to them, but sought to inspire through his own example. He often attended events and was a beloved figure in the Jewish student community.

When Irwin passed away in 2009 his widow, Ann, became one of our strongest supports. Ann was an active member and Past President of the Women's Alliance of the Jewish Community Federation. She used her role as a leader in the Jewish community to spread awareness of Hillel's work with college students. She worked tirelessly in support of Jewish life throughout the Bay Area.

Judaism teaches that people are measured by the good they leaves behind them. Irwin and Ann left a lot of good, their personal examples are the greatest lesson of all.

Join us in honoring the memory of Irwin and Ann Bear  ז״ל  by entering the Inaugural SF Hillel Poker Tournament.

Your support is an extension of Irwin’s efforts to ensure Jewish college students enjoy a vibrant home in San Francisco.
